About James
Before relocating to the Indianapolis area in 2020, James Romeo completed a season with the Vancouver Symphony in British Columbia as the Piccolo/Assistant Principal Flutist. He has performed regularly with the San Diego Symphony and San Diego Opera, and also with the Tucson Symphony, and Modesto Symphony. He made his solo debut in 2004 at the La Jolla Music Society’s Prelude Young Artist Series, and in 2008, he made his solo orchestral debut with the Roosevelt University Orchestra in Chicago, IL, performing the Nielsen Concerto. He performed the world premiere of the Flute Sonata by David DeBoor Canfield, and has been featured as a solo artist with the Mesa College Jazz Band and the San Diego Flute Guild Summer Flute Camp.
James earned his Bachelor's from Indiana University, a Master of Music at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and has performed in master classes with Robert Langevin, Mathieu Dufour, Jennifer Gunn, Denis Bluteau and Nicola Mazzanti. He is the recipient of multiple awards, taking first place at the Tuesday Musical Association in Ohio (‘11) and second place at the SD Flute Guild Young Artist Competition (‘11). He is the four-time winner at the Musical Merit Foundation of Greater San Diego (‘06, ‘09, ‘11, ‘12), as well being the winner of several scholarships and educational competitions.
James has taught privately and coached flute students in multiple schools throughout San Diego County and in Vancouver, BC. He also enjoyed leading the Flute Ensemble for several years at Villa Musica Community Music Center in San Diego. James is now teaching in the Indianapolis area. When he is not performing, teaching, and practicing (of course!), he loves spending time with his wife and four children.
